Q5: Twin Oaks to host Fall Craft Fair - Leavenworth Times

Source: www.leavenworthtimes.com

Roberta Pretz is the activity director at Twin Oaks Retirement Community. Twin Oaks is hosting a Fall Craft Fair at 457 W. Eisenhower in Lansing Oct. The featured items will be woolen mittens handcrafted by Twin Oaks residents along with many other homemade items. Pretz and Mary Woodson sew the mittens and many other residents serve as quality controllers. Early in 2014 I was looking for ideas to start a sewing group for the ladies. Thought of our “mitten tree” from Christmas time and realized we could make mittens to donate instead of asking for donations. I checked the Internet for ideas and found patterns for making mittens from wool sweaters that could be purchased at Goodwill. After making a few pairs we realized that these mittens wouldn’t be given away. I spent the weekend learning about “felting” wool. When you wash wool sweaters in hot water and dry them in a hot dryer the fibers bond together and you end up with “felted” wool. Depending on the wool content of any certain sweater, you get a variety of results. Plus when you cut the sweaters apart they don’t unravel. We add pockets, buttons or trim so they each end up unique. Then we use polyester fleece for lining and they are super warm and cozy. We start after Christmas and work on them every Wednesday so it is labor intensive. Sewing does take a while. Mary Woodson, Virginia Williams and I did most of the sewing. However one of our resident’s daughter-in-law did some sewing for us. Recently we’ve had a new resident move in and Carolyn Wagner has gotten involved. We waste no part of the sweaters. We donate the zippers to a lady who makes bags, the strip of button holes we use for trim on the pockets, we make hand warmers out of pieces that are too small to use for mittens, I’ve even made catnip mice out of the small leftover pieces. Some were donated to LAWS at the Country Store for homeless cats. Everyone who helps is usually amazed how well the mittens turn out. The residents are quite proud of the finished product and family members own quite a few that we made last year. I’ve been asked, “What are we making next. ” But I think we are all ready to put the mittens to bed. We made about 170 pairs last year and this year we have over 200 pairs.

When combined in a single garment, pillow, or throw, knitting and crochet can create dazzling effects. Knitting Loves Crochet is brimming with unique designs that make the most of both crafts. You'll find great patterns that use crochet to create edgings, such as a chic knit cardigan edged with lacy crochet; a stunning, fitted tank finished with a paler shade of crochet at the top and bottom; and placemats trimmed with delicate crocheted color. Other patterns use crocheted insets and motifs — granny squares in dog sweaters, flowers on a felted purse, fingerless gloves with beaded crochet wrist trim. The possibilities are endless!

Even if you don't have your own dogs, you could consider making a pet bed for your local animal rescue, or a sweater for the smaller dogs that may feel the cold. But if you do have a dog, that's even more exciting because you'll get to watch them model your creations. You could make them bandannas or even extravagant costumes, the possibilities are truly endless--and truly adorable.
