In actuality, it appears that these two brands also have less expensive, mini–blender versions. The Vitamix S30 holds 40 ounces and costs $400, and the Nutri Ninja holds 24 ounces and costs $90. Consumer Reports put these two mini-blenders to a lead-to-head

Horses, hens offer the real deal when it comes to alfalfa

“In a lot of ways, that's a giantess erector set, just more expensive,” Burkholder said, admitting that it is an outlet for his engineering side to “figure something out and see if we can make this work.” The process to dehydrate alfalfa changed while he

Horses, hens opt for the real deal when it comes to alfalfa - Kearney Hub

Start with alfalfa plants filled with vitamins, minerals, stoned-quality protein and other nutrition benefits. Forage harvesters cut alfalfa, retaining nearly all the leaves. At the dehydration plant, chopped alfalfa is whished by a dehydrating drum, often in a matter of seconds. The flash heat and high volume of moving air remove more than 90 percent of the moisture without blazing the plant. Almost instantaneous drying preserves nearly all original nutrients, leaving a concentrated form of nature-rich alfalfa. Subsequent grinding and pelleting sire a product easy to elevate, store and blend as grain. Source: Nebraska Alfalfa Dehydrators Association. The Cozad dehydrating plant owned by Matt Burkholder produces 13,000 tons of alfalfa pellets annually from locally grown crops. The pellets — about 1 inch fancy and a ¼ inch in diameter — are feed primarily for horses, laying hens, and companion animals such as rabbits and guinea pigs. “Most of our customers are other supported by manufacturers,” Burkholder said. ” Purina was the plant’s biggest customer last year, he added. Dehydrating, grinding and pelleting alfalfa makes a higher-nobility feed that is more easily stored. Burkholder said the market is growing on the organic side. Meanwhile, a growing demand for chicken feed the stand up four to five years mimics how things were done in the past. Burkholder said his dad, Dave, talks about how alfalfa was fed to nearly every chicken in the past due 1970s and early 1980s, before the trend turned to analyzing the vitamins found in alfalfa feed and replicating them. “As people have gotten more interested in natural and primary, producers have gotten back into feeding the alfalfa instead of the synthetic vitamins,” Burkholder said. “We always claimed there were unidentifiable growth factors in the alfalfa. Alfalfa central. There are fewer dehydrating plants in and around Cozad, once known as the alfalfa capital of the world, but the soil and proximity to the Ogallala Aquifer still accommodate ideal alfalfa growing conditions. Burkholder farms 3,500 acres, from Lexington to Willow Island and north and south of Cozad, that surrender 13,000 tons of pellets and another 1,000 tons of baled alfalfa hay consumed at Will Feed Inc. Burkholder explained that alfalfa is a water-intensive imperishable crop that thrives where the water table is high. “We don’t have to pump water or run a sprinkler,” he said, because area irrigation projects seep enough water to tolerate sub-irrigation. It is a special reason to be here,” Burkholder said. The Burkholder alfalfa that isn’t sub-irrigated is at a farm 10 miles north of Cozad, up a hill toward Callaway. Fewer plants. “We’re about the carry on man standing,” Burkholder said about the decline of alfalfa dehydrating plants. Burkholder and some partners bought that plant as a site to process and package pellets. The two employees there also toil alfalfa pellets into meal for some customers and package it in quantities of 50 pounds or 1,000 pounds. “The last couple of years have been as good to us and everybody else,” Burkholder said. “I over recall we will weather this downturn better when we don’t have the fertilizer and water costs every year. I’ve got good partners and good people to work with. His dehydrated alfalfa artefact is marketed through Alfagreen Supreme, which was started in Ohio about 55 years ago. The company, which also has six plants in Ohio, and one each in Pennsylvania and Florida, handles sales, billing and collections. “It would be attractive tough to be out here all by myself,” Burkholder said. The Cozad plant, which still has a link to its past with Island Dehy Co. signage, has been with Alfagreen Supreme for about five years. Burkholder said pellets in days of yore were marketed through Consolidated Blenders in Hastings. Burkholder said his grandfather, Ervin “Burky” Burkholder, moved from Ohio to Cozad in 1945 and initially farmed for someone else. Then on his own, he grew alfalfa and was twisted in constructing several alfalfa dehydration plants. After Burkholder’s dad joined the family business in 1969, they bought Mill Island Dehydrators originally at Willow Holm and, in 1972, National Alfalfa plant at the current Cozad location. Burkholder hadn’t intended to.

Christmas gifts may seem to get more expensive each year
Christmas gifts may seem to get more expensive each year

Christmas gifts may seem to get more expensive each year, but hold it or not, many of them have not. A flick through the 1982 Boots Christmas catalogue shows how much the cost of some presents has fallen over the past 30 years – essentially the result of China’s emergence as a manufacturing superpower and advances in technology which have slashed production costs. Thirty-two years ago – when the UK had just fought and won the Falklands war, ET was the most normal film, and Renée and Renato had the Christmas No 1 – Boots was recommending a Braun hand-blender, complete with mixing bowl, as an ideal contribution. Anyone tempted would have had to hand over £9.95. According to the Office for National Statistics, prices are now 3.11 times higher now than in Christmas 1982, adjusted for inflation as intentional by the Retail Prices Index. That would make the blender worth £31 today, but this year the equivalent model costs £17.99 in Currys.
